Why is the Colares region so special for wine tasting?

Colares is one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in Portugal, the westernmost in mainland Europe, and also one of the smallest wine-producing regions in the country. The unique character of Colares wines comes from an exceptional combination of traditional grape varieties, deep sandy soils and a mild and humid Atlantic-influenced climate.

The vineyards are planted in sandy terrain, dug down to the hard clay beneath. This sand protected, and continues to protect, the vines from phylloxera, the pest that devastated most European vineyards in the nineteenth century. For this reason, the Ramisco and Malvasia de Colares grape varieties are among the oldest in Portugal, with historical records dating back to 1255.

Wines certified under the Colares DOC designation still retain a rare characteristic today. The vines remain ungrafted, growing on their original rootstock rather than on American rootstock. The result is wines of strong character, Atlantic freshness, structure, and remarkable ageing potential, making wine tasting in Sintra a truly distinctive experience.

Colares wine tasting

At the end of the walk, or as the central part of the experience, you will have the opportunity to enjoy an authentic wine tasting in Sintra, sampling award-winning wines from the Colares region.

Some wineries produce wines under the historic Colares DOC designation, known for its tradition and unique terroir, of the Ramisco and Malvasia de Colares varieties.

Tastings may include visits to historic wineries near Sintra, guided sessions featuring several locally produced wines, and explanations about traditional production methods and regional grape varieties.

These experiences typically last between one and three hours, depending on the format of the visit and the number of wines included.

(Experience is 1 -2 hours, walk is an additional 1-3hours)
